Editor’s note: We’re excited to announce that one of our Mocha Club members and volunteers, Annie, will be blogging from Capetown, South Africa on the Mocha Club trip that leaves on May 28th! This is our first official “trip blogger” so please help us spread the word and check back for updates!

Hi y’all. I should have known better. I should have known that if I planned to pack on Tuesday, it would actually get done on Wednesday. I’m not a great pre-packer. And honestly, the pressure of you waiting on the video is the only reason I’m packed now. A few things:

1) I’m learning how to use this newfangled flip video camera. It’s very cool, but forgive the shaky-shakes.

2) We have a professional video editor that works with us at Mocha Club. I am not her.

3) Once I finished the video, I realized I had forgotten to pack any pants. So for total honesty’s sake, you should know that I’m going to have to pack some pants.

We leave for South Africa from Nashville on Thursday, May 28th but don’t arrive in Cape Town until Saturday. We’ll update you as soon as we are able.

I’ve had this deep longing in my heart to serve Africa since I was 15. I have no idea why, and no idea where it came from, but for years I’ve felt the pull. I found the Mocha Club and after realizing how easy it is to give up just a small amount of money to make a difference, signed up, and have gotten more involved since. In wanting to satisfy my desire to help, I was handed instead a helping of grace and humility that created an even deeper need to understand. “I Need Africa” rings true for me because, at the end of the day, it’s my heart and soul that is changed by Africa, and I feel more whole because of it.

I joined because I thought it was such a brilliant, simple concept. Back in 2006, I just kept hearing vaguely about bad stuff going on "in Africa." I remember thinking, "Okay...? But what can I do about it?" 2 mochas a month -- that's what I could do! I volunteer in whatever capacity I'm needed because I believe in MC and I've spent years seeing my small contribution resulting in real impact halfway around the world.
