I joined because I thought it was such a brilliant, simple concept. Back in 2006, I just kept hearing vaguely about bad stuff going on "in Africa." I remember thinking, "Okay...? But what can I do about it?" 2 mochas a month -- that's what I could do! I volunteer in whatever capacity I'm needed because I believe in MC and I've spent years seeing my small contribution resulting in real impact halfway around the world.

For the longest time, I’ve been trying to figure out just why I need Africa.  It seems like it should be so very simple.  I’ve been a Mocha Club member for years.  I interned and even went on a trip.  Then it finally hit me.  I spend almost 2 weeks seeing things that I would try to comprehend at home in my comfortable little life, but I could never really understand until I was face to face with them. I need Africa because Africa showed me a bigger reality than the one I thought I was living in.  I need Africa because Africa taught me how to dream big. Africa showed me that I too have a place in changing the world around me; it’s now up to me if I want to take it.
