Education

Education | All Project Areas

Should where you are born determine your opportunity for a life of basic dignity? Providing education for a child can determine a completely new path for his or her life – and with your help, we can reverse the trends of injustice and poverty that lead to a lack of education in Africa. We support education projects in several countries, addressing each country’s needs individually.

Amongst others, we’ve built schools in Ethiopia and Kenya. Because a lack of education often leads to unemployment, we’ve also helped fund job-training centers in South Africa and the Kibera slums of Kenya. In Africa, employment can equal the ability to feed your children or not. Together, we help provide a holistic approach to vocational training through small business loans and job skills instruction.

Our Current Work

New Dawn Educational Centre

New Dawn Educational Centre

Made from modified, recycled shipping containers and featuring solar energy that powers all things electric, New Dawn Education Centre is the pride of the slum communities of Huruma and Githogoro, in the suburbs of Nairobi, Kenya. Until 2004, when New Dawn opened it’s doors, most young people would not have had an opportunity for a high school education. Mocha Club Members have partnered with the school to provide study labs, books, scholarship support, salary assistance and many other resources.

The school is a “green energy” school with solar energy, a pumping station that brings water from the river that is purified and made potable. There is a rain catchment system that provides water for drip irrigation for the vegetable gardens and greenhouse. There is also a bio-digester that turns cow dung into methane gas to heat the porridge and tea for breakfast. All of these are cost saving for the school making them independent from the cities electric and water grids.

Mocha Club partners with New Dawn Educational Centre to provide a top-notch education to the young people of the area as well as to invest in the medical and clean water needs of the community through a partnering clinic and water solution.

I joined the Mocha Club because I loved that as a college student I could help save lives with as little as $9 a month. I also appreciated the Christian artists aspect of reaching other members to join. In the Summer of 2013 I became a Artist Relations intern and got to work with some of artists personally. Having spent three months with the team I can truly say Mocha Club cares about Africans. They strive to make a difference in the lives of the less fortunate; and in the process it teaches us more about the things that really matter in life.

For the longest time, I’ve been trying to figure out just why I need Africa.  It seems like it should be so very simple.  I’ve been a Mocha Club member for years.  I interned and even went on a trip.  Then it finally hit me.  I spend almost 2 weeks seeing things that I would try to comprehend at home in my comfortable little life, but I could never really understand until I was face to face with them. I need Africa because Africa showed me a bigger reality than the one I thought I was living in.  I need Africa because Africa taught me how to dream big. Africa showed me that I too have a place in changing the world around me; it’s now up to me if I want to take it.
