Annie Downs - Purpose Project with Mocha Club!

The 10k Purpose Project

Project: Education

Goal: $10,000

Amount Raised: $12355

Month: February 2014

Blog: http://annieblogs.com

Why:

Hi, I’m Annie.  I’m an author and a speaker, where I spend a lot of time with high school & college girls.  I used to work for the Mocha Club, and before that I taught school.  And when you combine all of these current & past jobs together, you get to something that I really love: the New Dawn school in Kenya.

Made from modified, recycled shipping containers and featuring solar energy that powers all things electric, New Dawn Education Centre is the pride of the slum communities of Huruma and Githogoro, in the suburbs of Nairobi, Kenya. Until 2004, when New Dawn opened it’s doors, most young people would not have had an opportunity for a high school education. Primary education in Kenya is free, but high school is only for those who can afford the fees.

The teachers & staff at New Dawn work hard to close the poverty gap by providing a top-notch education, with the hope that students will be empowered to attend university and achieve a quality of life unimagined in a childhood of poverty.

The school was built in 2 parts… the “old” building is 2 stories, and houses 4 classrooms (one for each grade). The “new” building opened just 2 years ago, and its 3 stories make up the resource center — with the science labs, computer lab, assembly hall and library. The new building is much more energy efficient and was built with better planning and long-term sustainability.

The old building, the 4 classrooms where the kids learn each day, need our help! Our goal is to raise $2500 to help each of the classrooms… repairing the walls & ceilings, buying new white boards, and even helping to cover the cost of the amazing teachers that are giving their lives to teach these kids.

So… we’re raising $10,000 this month for these kids.  And when we do? I’m gonna go to Africa & see it for myself.  AND — I’m going to take one of you with me!  Yup. If you donate at-least $25, you’ll be eligible to apply to come with us in May. For free.

So let’s do this guys. This is the shortest month of the year (hey, I like a challenge.) so we’ve gotta jump on it!

*those who donate at-least $25 & are 18+ will be contacted at the end of the month with an application to go on the trip! if you have any questions email trips(at)themochaclub.org.

Mocha Club Members

Ashley
A friend in college introduced me to Mocha Club and I joined with little idea of the effect it would have on my life. The impact the women in the Women at Risk program had on my heart, my faith and my life is far greater than my individual contribution. I continue to give because I cherish these women; their courage, strength, vulnerability and desire to grow is remarkable. What was once a monthly donation that I didn't think much about became an experience that touched my life forever.

I originally joined Mocha Club to help create change in a world far less fortunate than mine. Through my time volunteering and interning, I learned not only about how much change Mocha Club was creating in Africa, but also how much I could learn from the Africans whose lives Mocha Club was affecting. I remember seeing the "I Need Africa" video for the first time and nearly being moved to tears from the truth of that film. Overall, the community of people involved in Mocha Club are not only intelligent, creative, passionate, and general rockstars, they also are welcoming and made me feel like part of a family working to better not only the lives of others, but also, our own lives.
