Annie Downs - Purpose Project with Mocha Club!

The 10k Purpose Project

Project: Education

Goal: $10,000

Amount Raised: $12355

Month: February 2014

Blog: http://annieblogs.com

Why:

Hi, I’m Annie.  I’m an author and a speaker, where I spend a lot of time with high school & college girls.  I used to work for the Mocha Club, and before that I taught school.  And when you combine all of these current & past jobs together, you get to something that I really love: the New Dawn school in Kenya.

Made from modified, recycled shipping containers and featuring solar energy that powers all things electric, New Dawn Education Centre is the pride of the slum communities of Huruma and Githogoro, in the suburbs of Nairobi, Kenya. Until 2004, when New Dawn opened it’s doors, most young people would not have had an opportunity for a high school education. Primary education in Kenya is free, but high school is only for those who can afford the fees.

The teachers & staff at New Dawn work hard to close the poverty gap by providing a top-notch education, with the hope that students will be empowered to attend university and achieve a quality of life unimagined in a childhood of poverty.

The school was built in 2 parts… the “old” building is 2 stories, and houses 4 classrooms (one for each grade). The “new” building opened just 2 years ago, and its 3 stories make up the resource center — with the science labs, computer lab, assembly hall and library. The new building is much more energy efficient and was built with better planning and long-term sustainability.

The old building, the 4 classrooms where the kids learn each day, need our help! Our goal is to raise $2500 to help each of the classrooms… repairing the walls & ceilings, buying new white boards, and even helping to cover the cost of the amazing teachers that are giving their lives to teach these kids.

So… we’re raising $10,000 this month for these kids.  And when we do? I’m gonna go to Africa & see it for myself.  AND — I’m going to take one of you with me!  Yup. If you donate at-least $25, you’ll be eligible to apply to come with us in May. For free.

So let’s do this guys. This is the shortest month of the year (hey, I like a challenge.) so we’ve gotta jump on it!

*those who donate at-least $25 & are 18+ will be contacted at the end of the month with an application to go on the trip! if you have any questions email trips(at)themochaclub.org.

When I decide to make giving a priority for the new year, I was really nervous about how I would budget it into an already tight budget. After hearing that I could give $9 a month, I was convinced I could find $9 worth of unnecessary purchases in my monthly spending and turn that into positive spending. Now that I am giving, I realize there was nothing to be nervous about. I do not even miss those unnecessary purchases and each month when I see my $9 charge for Mocha Club, I know I am helping create change.  Even if I help change one life, I am making a difference.

I joined Mocha Club at a Dave Barnes concert because after hearing about the organization, I learned that the value of $9/month in Africa was immeasurable compared to what $9/month would be used for here in the U.S.  Through Mocha Club, I got a chance to go to South Africa and meet the people of the Cape Town townships.  We helped build a preschool where children now have a place to go during the day and hear about Jesus.  I got to see, first hand, the people that are positively impacted and forever changed through the money that people give to Mocha Club.  I will always be a member of Mocha Club because my money each month provides support for that preschool that I helped to build.  Kids are now able to have a place to go to eat, play, and experience the love of God all because I, along with the other members of Mocha Club, agreed to give up a Starbucks or two a month.  I’m humbled and honored to have the opportunity to partner with Mocha Club to serve the wonderful people of Africa.
